When Did Every Day Become Cinco de Lime-o?

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Sunday, 04 May 2008

Limey BeerDid I miss the memo about limes being the new “thing” for beer? I mean, for years and years, the only beer I associated with limes was Corona. And, I was (and still am) ok with that because there’s something about the act of slicing up an actual lime, dropping it in the bottle and then trying your best to not let your beer splurt all over the place while you turn the whole thing upside down. Hell, that’s half the fun of summer barbeques.

Then, last summer, odd things started happening. A-B rolled out Landshark Lager with Jimmy Buffett’s blessing. If you haven’t tried it, it’s basically Bud with a touch of lime. Or, as I posted up back in February, it’s a slightly limey beer for those too lazy to slice limes.

The Fastest Growing Beer Brands of 2007

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Thursday, 03 April 2008

Blue Moon LogoThe IRI Beer, Wine and Spirits Practice, an independent company which provides manufacturers, distributors and retailers with market information, announced its “Top 30 Beer Brand Performers in 2007″ and “Top 15 New Beer Brands in 2007.” The lists provide a look at the industry’s 30 fastest growing beer brands as well as emerging new brand entries.

For the Top 30 Beer Brand Performers ranking, IRI analyzed volume growth, share of segment trends, everyday base pricing, and incremental sales growth in 2007 versus 2006 to determine the brands with the strongest performance in the beer industry. (Or, if you’ve had a couple already today, that’d be a ranking of the brews which saw the biggest growth in 2007, not necessarily the brands that sold the most overall.)

Washington Post’s 2nd Annual “Beer Madness”

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Friday, 14 March 2008

Beer MadnessI love WashingtonPost.com. Outside of what I pay the IRS and my general disdain for politics, I have no connection to our nation’s capital in any way, shape or form. Yet, I still find myself checking out WashingtonPost.com on a regular basis because it’s not the stodgy newspaper site you’d expect. Case in point: Beer Madness!

It almost sounds like it should be a grindhouse flick of some sort, but it’s their 2nd annual “showdown of suds” pitting 32 beers in head-to-head matchups. What I love about this feature, aside from the slick animation and fun interface, is that it includes brews from across the country ranging from nationals (Miller Chill, Schlitz and Michelob) to some great regional offerings (Penn Pilsner, Wild Goose IPA and Abita Turbodog) to everything inbetween. Last year’s champ, Brooklyn Lager, is back to defend its title as is runner-up Saranac Pale Ale.

Let the games begin!
