Beer Madness: The Sweet Sixteen

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Wednesday, 19 March 2008

Beer MadnessWashingtonPost.com‘s “Beer Madness” has entered its second week as the original 32 brews have been whittled down to the sweet 16. The second round features some interesting matchups:

Brooklyn Lager vs. Flying Dog Old Scratch
Penn Pilsner vs. Raven Lager
Stone Pale Ale vs. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
Harpoon IPA vs. Troegs HopBack Amber Ale
Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat vs. Ommegan Hennepin
Oxford Rasberry Wheat vs. Rogue Juniper Pale Ale
Abita Turbodog vs. Sam Adams Honey Porter
Smuttynose Old Brown Dog Ale vs. Hook & Ladder Backdraft Brown

Voting ends March 23rd, so be sure to make your voice heard. My money’s still on Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat. It’s too good to lose out this early and, with the currently popularity of wheat beer, it has to be the odds-on favorite.

Washington Post’s 2nd Annual “Beer Madness”

Beer MadnessI love WashingtonPost.com. Outside of what I pay the IRS and my general disdain for politics, I have no connection to our nation’s capital in any way, shape or form. Yet, I still find myself checking out WashingtonPost.com on a regular basis because it’s not the stodgy newspaper site you’d expect. Case in point: Beer Madness!

It almost sounds like it should be a grindhouse flick of some sort, but it’s their 2nd annual “showdown of suds” pitting 32 beers in head-to-head matchups. What I love about this feature, aside from the slick animation and fun interface, is that it includes brews from across the country ranging from nationals (Miller Chill, Schlitz and Michelob) to some great regional offerings (Penn Pilsner, Wild Goose IPA and Abita Turbodog) to everything inbetween. Last year’s champ, Brooklyn Lager, is back to defend its title as is runner-up Saranac Pale Ale.

Let the games begin!
