Buying a Keg and Giving Someone the Middle Finger in Belmar Just Got Easier

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Saturday, 05 July 2008

Belmar New JerseyFOXNews.com is reporting that the New Jersey shore town of Belmar has made it easier to tap a keg and flip someone off.

Apparently, Belmar enacted a “beer keg tagging law” last year, requiring beer kegs to have the name, address and phone number of the person renting them. The idea is that if minors are found drinking from a keg, police will be able to know who to charge with providing alcohol to minors. About a dozen other states currently require keg tagging, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Delta Loves Leinies (And It Shows!)

Sunset WheatSure, it may cost you $25 to check that second bag the next time you fly Delta, but at least $6 for a Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat won’t seem so bad then! Yes, you hear that correctly, Delta will soon be serving up craft beer for passengers on all flights worldwide. It’s one of four beers the airline is offering, but Leinies is the only craft beer on the menu. (Can’t seem to find a list of the other three, but I’m guessing they’re the usual suspects.)

“Delta is committed to providing its customers with choice and an onboard experience that is both stylish and entertaining,” said Jake Frank, Delta’s managing director of Global Product Development and Delivery. “Offering customers a premium craft beer like Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat complements our product strategy and the other enhancements we’ve recently added for our customers - including signature cocktails and food created by celebrity chefs.”

No word on whether or not the stewardesses will be providing orange slices, but I’ll gladly drink it with or without the garnish at 30,000 feet.

If you’ve read the blog for a while, you know that I’m a big fan of Sunset Wheat. It’s brewed in small, batches and is a a year-round beer featuring a slightly fruity and citrus character complemented with coriander. It is brewed with a combination of malted wheat and pale barley malt, cluster hops and natural flavors and checks in at 4.9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

American Amber AleIf you’re a fan of Rogue, you already know about the beery goodness that is Rogue’s American Amber Ale. They’ve been brewing it since 1988 and you can normally find it in 22oz bottles and six packs at your store of choice. But, what if you’re just a little bit thirstier than that? What if you don’t want to carry three 22oz bottles home? Then this is your lucky day because they’re serving up 64oz growlers (WOW!) for a limited time.

Get Your Budweiser Fix in Ho Chi Minh City

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Wednesday, 11 June 2008

BudweiserBefore I saw this announcement from Anheuser-Busch, I thought Budweiser was pretty much on par with McDonald’s with billions and billions served across the planet. Apparently, the Vietnamese have been thirsty this whole time as Budweiser will be available throughout Vietnam beginning this month.

Budweiser initially will be available at upscale bars, restaurants and supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City as well as select chain outlets across the nation.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a press release without a quote from someone in upper management who manages to turn the concept of providing a quality product to valued customers into “we’re doing this because we think we can make a lot of money doing it” in just a few sentences. (Of course, we all know that they’re bringing Bud to Vietnam because of a profit motive, but they don’t have to remind us!)

Utica Club and Saranac Flying Off The Shelves

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Wednesday, 04 June 2008

1010 WINS-AM in New York City is reporting that Utica Club and Saranac were flying off the shelves over the weekend as people were stocking up following the fire at F.X. Matt Brewery in Utica, who cans for both brands.

The owner of Marcy Beverage in the Mohawk Valley town of Marcy says that after the Thursday night fire, it sold 550 cases of the brewery’s products, which include Saranac and Utica Club beers. One customer ordered 22 cases of Utica Club on Friday. Canning makes up about 20% of business at the brewery but vice president Fred Matt says plans are under way to outsource canning while Matt’s rebuilds.

I can only imagine the hell I’d get if I walked in the front door with 22 cases of beer, so I’ll secretly raise a pint to that gentleman.
