Nothing Like a Male’ana with Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale

Fire Rock Pale AleThere are certain things you expect at a wedding reception: the requisite bride & groom, a cake of some kind, scallops wrapped in bacon, the “Electric Slide” and usally a decent open bar that has good drinks, but nothing you’re too excited about. Yeah, that’s about how I expected things to work out at my friend John’s wedding on Friday afternoon.

When I got to Urie’s Waterfront Restaurant in Wildwood, NJ and stepped up to the bar, there was a smile from ear-to-ear when I saw what was on tap for that afternoon. Yeah, there were the usual suspects: Budweiser, Coors Light and local fave Yuengling Lager. But, who would have expected Stella Artois, Heineken, Smithwick’s and Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale on tap at a wedding? Very nice selection…

Tailgating with Stone Imperial Russian Stout

Posted by Andy Gradel | In The Fridge | Saturday, 21 June 2008

Stone Imperial Russian StoutThere are certain things you expect at a Jimmy Buffett tailgate: limey beer, margaritas, tiki bars, men wearing coconut bikini tops, you know the deal. But, a bottle of great craft beer at a Buffett tailgate? No way!

Surprises come in all shapes and sizes. This time, it was a one-pint six-ounce bottle of Stone Imperial Russian Stout that my friend Mike had just cracked open. Harpoon Brews Up Leviathan Series of Limited Edition Beers

HarpoonBoston’s Harpoon Brewery will being introducing the Harpoon Leviathan Series, a limited edition line of specialty beers. The Leviathan Series is an exploration in brewing big beers for adventurous palates.

First up in the series is, Leviathan Triticus. Latin for “wheat,” Triticus is a strong and dark wheat wine-style ale that boasts 14.3% alcohol-by-volume (yummy!). The blend of 50% wheat malts, including caramel and chocolate, provides color and depth of flavor. Complex hopping and dry-hopping lends a delicate spiciness and just enough balance to complement its strength. Once brewed, the Triticus was transferred to 50-gallon bourbon barrels and aged at the brewery for over 2 months.

Miller Lite Brewers Collection Test Marketing Extended

Posted by Andy Gradel | New Brews | Tuesday, 17 June 2008

Back in April, Miller Lite announced that they’d be rolling out their new “Brewers Collection” nationwide by September. While I do have some misgivings about the idea of buying a beer from a megabrewer that’s seemingly being marketed purely to ride the coattails of the growing popularity of actual craft beer, I was actually looking forward to seeing if they could pull it off. The Lite wheat, amber and blonde ale styles were set to be marketed as “Craft Beer. Done Lite.” with a mere 110 calories per 12-ounce serving. (That’s music to the ears of a guy who swears he’s getting a little pudgier around the tummy in his 30’s!)
