When Did Every Day Become Cinco de Lime-o?

Limey BeerDid I miss the memo about limes being the new “thing” for beer? I mean, for years and years, the only beer I associated with limes was Corona. And, I was (and still am) ok with that because there’s something about the act of slicing up an actual lime, dropping it in the bottle and then trying your best to not let your beer splurt all over the place while you turn the whole thing upside down. Hell, that’s half the fun of summer barbeques.

Then, last summer, odd things started happening. A-B rolled out Landshark Lager with Jimmy Buffett’s blessing. If you haven’t tried it, it’s basically Bud with a touch of lime. Or, as I posted up back in February, it’s a slightly limey beer for those too lazy to slice limes.

Not to be outdone, Miller rolled out Miller Chill last year. In case you haven’t seen the billboards and print ads everywhere, it’s “a chelada-style light beer” that’s “a refreshing take on an authentic Mexican beer recipe with a hint of lime & salt.” Muy refreshing? Ahhh… can’t say. I’d rather go for an authentic Mexican beer instead of Miller’s “refreshing” take on one. Apparently, I’m in the minority on that as Miller Chill became the best-selling new beer brand in 2007.

That brings us to A-B’s latest announcement that they’re rolling out (big surprise!) - Bud Light Lime! Yes, my friends, it’s “a crisp light lager beer that combines the superior drinkability of Bud Light with a splash of 100 percent natural lime flavor.” Or, what you could have had all along if you would have just bought a lime and done a little slicing.

Hmm… now that I think about it, why are we waiting for the big brewers to feed us our lime-induced beers? We could make our own! How about Guinness Lime, Yunegling Lime, Red Stripe Lime or maybe even Tsing Tso Lime? Yes, all could be yours with a quick trip to the supermarket or produce stand combined with a trip to the liquor store.

Or, we could do what should have been done a year ago and STOP THE LIME MADNESS!

With Cinco De Mayo fast approaching, let’s put an end to the unwanted liming of our beers by drinking the one and only beer which should have an actual lime in the bottle - Corona (or Corona Light and Coronitas, if you prefer.) Don’t give in to the artificial, corporate liming and stand up for those who have been liming since before limes were cool. Raise a bottle of Corona and viva la revolution!
