Thursday night, F.X. Matt brewery in Utica, New York, maker of Saranac beer and ale, was engulfed in flames as four fire companies battled a fire and residents were evacuated from a six-block area surrounding the brewery.
Early reports are that the fire originated on the second floor of the bottling shop and quickly spread to the upper floors. Employees have said that a welding project may be to blame.

I feel a little funny including this blurb, but it is technically beer. I guess it’s sort of like running a coffee blog and having to include info about decaf…
That aside, if you’re looking to toss back a few this Summer but don’t want to worry about the drive home, you might actually have a decent non-alcoholic alternative thanks to our friends up north.

Heading into the weekend, it looks like we’ve got three new contenders for your beer-buying dollars.
Flying Dog Brewery’s Kerberos Tripel joins the brewery’s “Canis Major Series” of brews. Kerberos Tripel is a bottle conditioned, strong Belgian-style ale with a slightly hazy appearance and mousse-like head. It is brewed with Golding and Saaz hops and Pilsner and Aromatic malts to yield a medium body and champagne-like carbonation.
Mendocino Brewing has introduced a new limited edition Summer Seasonal White Ale. Unfiltered and cloudy, the Belgian White Ale has 4.8% ABV and “features a thirst quenching blend of sweet orange peel and the subtle spiciness of coriander, topped off with a delicate twist of lemon.”
Finally, Jersey’s own Flying Fish has rolled out their Farmhouse Summer Ale for its 12th season. This is a great seasonal brewed with Belgian two-row pale malt and 7% wheat, lightly filtered, and has a earthy, spicy character from Styrian Goldings hops.
Enjoy!
It’s Memorial Weekend, which means it’s time for barbeques, pool parties, fireworks, and the return of Saranac’s 12 Beers of Summer!
This year’s package features:
- Saranac Pomegranate Wheat – An American pale wheat ale with 4.70% ABV
- Saranac Belgian White – A tasty witbier that checks in at 5.30% ABV
- Saranac Hefeweizen – A decent hefeweizen with 5.60% ABV
- Saranac Golden Pilsener – A seasonal German pilsener with 5.10% ABV
- Saranac Summer Ale – A seasonal herb and spice ale with subtle hints of lemon and 4.7% ABV.
- Saranac Kolsch – A blond ale that is brewed to be lighter than the “house” beer that was served in Cologne 200 years ago. Checks in at 5% ABV.
The “Twelve Beers of Summer” should be available in your liquor store of choice from now through July.
After spending last weekend driving 10 hours each way to Ohio, I started taking stock of just how much junk I ate during the trip. From Krispy Kreme and White Castle to Roy Rogers and Burger King, it’s amazing what being cooped up in a car for hours on end will do to your diet… Thankfully, our friends at Miller are here to rescue me from my growing waistline with what can only be described as the greatest scientific discovery of this century – a light beer that is only 64 calories and 2.4 grams of carbohydrates per 12 ounce serving!
Yes, that’s right, it’s time for MGD 64, the beer that’s lighter than lite!
MGD 64 is a reformulation of Miller Genuine Draft Light that has just 64 calories. It was initially launched last summer in Madison, Wisconsin and the feedback was positive enough for Miller to roll it out to a handful of additional test markets in March, including Arizona, San Diego and Sacramento.
