Beer - A Healthy Part of Your Daily Diet?

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Tuesday, 29 April 2008

Looking for a couple good reasons to crack open a beer after work? Sure, who isn’t! Of course, there’s so many social stigmas to overcome. Drinking on a worknight? Having a beer before 5pm? Sneaking a beer into church? All things that are, unfortunately, generally considered socially unacceptable. (Reasons #242, #243 and #244 to start a new society…)

Thankfully, we’ve got the crackerjack reporters at The Dallas Morning News fighting for us with great articles like this one I ran across: Good (as in healthy!) Reasons to Drink Beer.

Among the health benefits:

  • Decreased chance of having a heart attack - Moderate consumption can make men who drink it have a 30 to 35 percent less likely chance of having a heart attack than abstainers.
  • Increased levels of good cholesterol - It apparently also has a positive effect on the lining of blood vessels, says Dr. R. Curtis Ellison of Boston University School of Medicine.
  • Less chance of developing dementia - Lower dementia rates were reported by adults over age 65 who drank one to six alcoholic beverages over a week than their abstaining or over-imbibing counterparts. Such is the word from a 2003 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Of course, they did mention that other studies have shown that consuming at least two glasses of alcohol a day can increase a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer, but that’s the ying to the yang. Here at Drink-A-Pint, we try to spread positivity, so here’s to less dementia, more good cholesterol and fewer heart attacks!

Turning Japanese with Hitachino Nest White Ale

White AleWant to experience a slightly uncomfortable moment with your wife or girlfriend? Try this. Take her to an expensive restaurant for her birthday, order an expensive bottle of Japanese beer and then be sure to take a picture of it with your cell phone for your blog. Apparently, that’s not the most romantic thing to do, but it seemed like the right thing at the time.

2008 World Beer Cup Winners Announced

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Tuesday, 22 April 2008

World Beer CupThe World Beer Cup may be the Grammys or the Oscars of the beer industry, if only for the insane number of categories. We’re talking 91 awards ranging from Best Non-Alcoholic Malt Beverage (Radegast Birell, anyone?) to Best American-Style Wheat Wine Ale (that’d be Rubicon Brewing’s Winter Wheatwine). So, if this were a televised awards show, you’d probably have enough time to sample at least 1/4 of the winners during the announcement of the nominees, speeches, commercial breaks and the all-important in memoriam video montage of brewers we’ve lost overt the past year (*sniff*).

Thankfully, for you guys, this is just a blog I crank out while eating lunch, so we’ll keep it short, sweet and alcoholic.

Manayunk Brewery’s Kölsh Blonde & Schuylkill Punch

Posted by Andy Gradel | In The Fridge | Friday, 18 April 2008

Without a doubt, Spring is my favorite time of the year. The grass starts to turn a lush green. There’s baseball on the radio. And, of course, there’s outdoor drinking! Yes, there’s nothing like a couple of beers outside to make you feel like you’re really experiencing life.

So, with the temperature hovering around 80 yesterday, I set out for the Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant on the outskirts of Philly for some locally brewed beer on the deck overlooking the Schuylkill River.

Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant offers about 8 beers on tap and I decided to start off with a Kayak Kölsh Blonde German Ale. I was a little disappointed to see that the draft beer was being served in plastic cups which looked to be a tad on the small side, but that’s the price you pay for outdoor drinking.

There’s a Pale Moon on the Rise

Posted by Andy Gradel | News & Notes | Monday, 14 April 2008

Pale MoonIf you thought it was hard choosing between Blue Moon, Harvest Moon, Full Moon and Rising Moon, get ready for the beer-buying process to get a tad tougher as there’ll be a new “moon” on the shelves.

At their distributor conference, Coors annouced that they are expanding the Blue Moon family with the addition of a pale ale - Pale Moon. The “Belgian-style pale ale” checks in at 5.4% abv and will launch in several test cities next month with a national rollout planned for 2009.

According to the label: “Pale Moon is a drinkable pale ale that has a distinctive hop aroma, without the lingering aftertaste. This Belgian-Style Pale Ale is brewed with European malts, cascade hops and a touch of hibiscus and orange peel. Thse ingredients create a rich copper colored ale with a flavor complexity that one would expect from the Blue Moon Brewing Company.”

In addition to Pale Moon, you can expect to see 22-ounce bottles and seasonal 12-packs coming soon to a store near you. Blue Moon’s seasonal brews are currently only available as 6-packs.
